One night, a 63-year-old tramp is found in the Seine in central Paris by two sailors. At the hospital, the doctor finds that he was hit on the head before being thrown into the water. The tramp apparently used to be a physician. His wife has gotten very rich, because she inherited money from an aunt. She lives in a large apartment in Paris close to the Seine. It is now up to Maigret, to figure out what happened to the tramp!
