Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio was born in Nice, France, in 1940. Brought up by a French mother and an English father, he is bilingual and started writing at the age of 7. "Procès Verbal" was his first book to be published in 1963. It was awarded the Prix Renaudot and only just missed out on the Prix Goncourt. His first novels showed a certain aversion towards occidental society, which he considered violent and artificial. Having always showed an interest in ancient cultures, he travelled to Mexico in 1967 where his fascination for Indians increased. Between 1969 and 1973, he spent long periods of time living with an Embera tribe in Panama, a country he still visits frequently. He learnt their language and obtained a new identity. He then spent a few years in Albuquerque, New Mexico, teaching literature at the University of New Mexico and translated Native American myths. Le Clézio is the author of over 30 books, including novels, essays, translations of Indian mythology, and an ethnographic study of pre-Colombian Mexico. In 1980, he was awarded the Prix Morand for his works and in 1994 he was voted "biggest living French author" by readers of the magazine "Lire".
