A communicative French-language course for adolescent and adult learners, "Escales" follows a very thorough yet rapid progression, starting at a beginner's level. Progress is made via a series of systematic and guided activities, all set in a cultural context, which familiarise students with different types of register and forms of address.
Each unit begins with an introduction to new vocabulary and language structures which are then practised in a number of guided tasks. Comprehension skills in listening and reading are then tested, based on relevant sociocultural contexts which are later developed by exercises in authentic, conversation-based scenarios. Each unit ends with evaluation exercises to revise the material covered.
Each level provides around 120 hours of classroom learning and the "cahier d'exercices" for each level comes complete with an audio-CD, to encourage listening practice.
The student's book also includes the transcriptions of recorded texts and a grammar summary.
